This is a fine impression printed on chine applique, as published as plate 6 of "Animal Studies." The margins are trimmed to about 1 1/4 in. and the condition is good other than for residue of an old adhesive on the margin edges, verso. This unusual work was included in van Hoytema's most important set of prints which was published in 1898. These prints were rarely signed in pencil.

This is a fine, luminous impression printed on tissue-thin Japanese paper. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There's soft creasing here and there as a result of the printing process.) Graadt van Roggen was an etcher and woodcut artist and his best work, as shown here, is decidedly expressionist in nature. A few of his woodcuts were printed in color. He lived and worked in Bergen and he was a deaf from an early age. Ex-collection: Nijmeegs Museum, Holland.

Van Straten studied in Antwerp and was influenced by Masereel and Dufy. He's one of the preeminent Belgian expressionist printmakers from the 1930s.

This is a fine impression on cream wove paper in excellent condition. The margins are full. This impression was issued in La Gravure Originale Belge, Volume 3, 1929, in an edition of 50 impressions. There was also a separate edition of ten impressions. Van Straten, like Masereel, was a social commentator and many of his prints reflect upon the political and social environment between the wars.

The impressions are all fine and the condition is excellent. This early, expressionist effort by van Straten shows the influence of German printmaking as well as the work of Frans Masereel. This fine set was published by Lumiere, Antwerp. Provenance: private collection, Antwerp.

Inspired by the poem "The Sleeper" by Edgar Allen Poe (1831), La Dormeuse was one of van Straten's early block books and this particular effort won him the Lumière graphic art prize. Provenance: private collection, Antwerp.

The margins are full. The condition is fine apart from an occasional foxing(?) specks in the margins only. Van Straten examined a wide range of subjects; nightclub scenes, immigrants and the less fortunate, sailors, and erotica. He was often humorous in his outlook and this particular print is his 1930s view of Hollywood as seen though the eyes of a European.

This is the full, untrimmed sheet with a deckle edge all around. The condition is fine other than minor paper imperfections, one in the blank area at left, and an old fold in the lower margin. This important portrait is illustrated on page 16 of Theo van Hoytema 1863-1917, the 1999 exhibition catalogue for the Drents Museum/Gemeentemuseum show about the artist. An impression of this work is located in the Rijksmuseum collection.

The margins are wide and the condition is fine. (There's a small repair to the upper right margin corner.) Verstijnen started out as a glass and ceramic designer in Gouda and then Maastricht. He later established himself in the Hague (1918) at the Pulchri Studio and with "Haagse Kunstkring" and specialized in printmaking and paintings of floral and animal subjects. An important retrospective exhibition was held in 2006-07 at the Drents Museum and also at the Museum Mestag, both in Holland. His large woodcuts are exceptional and also quite rare. Flamingos was printed from four blocks and is so inscribed.

The margins are full and the condition is fine. Visser lived and worked in Amsterdam, and after 1927, he resided in Haarlem where this work was done. He was Director of de Vrije Haarlemse Schilderschool for many years and a member of "Arti et Amicitiae." HIs work is in multiple museum collections including the Frans Hals Museum and the Teylers Museum.

This compelling image typifies the artist's interest in realism tweaked with an element of mystery.

(Fain discoloration within a previous mat opening. Wiegers was an important member of the Dutch group "De Ploeg". He was friendly with Kirchner and they were neighbors in Davos. This is possibly a portrait of fellow artist Coosje van Haersolte.

This large woodcut is illustrated on page 131 of the 2002 Groninger Museum retrospective catalog of Wiegers work, "De Ceremoniemeester Heeft Het Spel Laten Beginnen." This is a later printing from the block, probably done in the 1950s.

The margins are full and the condition is excellent. This intense etching mirrors Wiegers's powerful and dynamic work in the woodcut medium. He worked closely with Kirchner in Davos, Switzerland, and Wiegers's prints during the 1920s are an important chapter in the history of 20th century Dutch graphic art. The Dutch expressionist movement, known as "de Ploeg," flourished largely due to this Davos connection between Kirchner and Wiegers. Many other artists followed suite as the expressionist movement was clearly not confined to any precise geographical borders. In Holland, the movement was based in Groningen.
