Snowed In - Calaveras Big Tree Hotel - RICE

Snowed In - Calaveras Big Tree Hotel
WILLIAM S. RICE
American, (1873-1963)
Woodcut printed in colors, circa 1930, edition probably about 15. 8 3/4 x 12 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a fine impression in very good condition. The margins are substantial and probably untrimmed. This print came to us in the original mat and there is just a faint trace of discoloration within the old opening and old paper tape hinges at the top corners, recto. The outstanding California woodcut is exemplary of Rice's best work in the medium.

Marsh Moon - RICE

Marsh Moon
WILLIAM S. RICE
American, (1873-1963)
Woodcut printed in colors, circa 1925, edition probably 15-20. 7 1/8 x 9 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a fine impression printed on a medium Japanese paper. The margins are about 1/2" on all sides and they have reinforced breaks on the left and right sides. (Breaks can occur from excessive pressure in the printing process.) This work is illustrated on page 42 of Arthur Wesley Dow and American Arts and Crafts by Nancy Green and Jessie Poesch (1999). That impression varies from ours in the added printing for the clouds at top. Variations such as this are found in Rice's work and among so many other creative blockprint artists.

Fruit Dish - RIST

Fruit Dish
LUIGI RIST
American, (1889-1959)
Woodcut printed in colors, 1945, Williams 18, edition 150. 14 x 9 7/8 in. Signed in ink in the image in the lower right. Titled in pencil. This is a superb, luminous impression of this major work. The paper is a light cream Japanese and the margins are full but modest in size which is typical. Although the recorded edition is 150, it's doubtful Rist printed them all due to the time consuming nature of inking and printing multiple blocks and even sections of the same block over and over. In the catalogue it states, "As many as fifty or more impressions are sometimes required to complete a given print." (See page 8).

Honeysuckle - ROYDS

Honeysuckle
MABEL ROYDS
British, (1874-1941)
Woodcut printed in colors, 1930s, Barton 66, small edition. 7 7/8 x 6 3/8 in. Signed in pencil. This is a fine impression with full margins. The colors are especially fresh and there are no condition issues. This subtle, nicely-designed work is printed with more opaque colors than most of her block prints. Royds almost never dated her prints and the edition sizes remains a mystery to this day. They have always been a great value in today's market and are getting much more difficult to acquire.

Columbines - ROYDS

Columbines
MABEL ROYDS
British, (1874-1941)
Woodcut printed in colors, 1930s, Barton 39, edition probably about 25. 7 3/8 x 6 1/4 in. This is a superb impression with full margins. (The margins are narrow on the sides and bottom but this is the original sheet which she chose to print on.) In addition, there is stray printers ink in the outer margins but this is part of the process and typical for Royds. This is an exceptional example of her work. Provenance: The Old Print Shop, New York.

Sunspots - ROYDS

Sunspots
MABEL ROYDS

Woodcut printed in colors, undated but probably cica 1910-15, Barton 4, edition unknown. 5 1/4 x 9 1/16 in. Signed in pencil, lower left. This is a fine impression with fresh yet subtle colors. The margins are narrow along the top and sides but we think this is the full, untrimmed sheet, as printed. This charming print is also quite rare. This is the first time we have had it.

The colors are fresh and vibrant. This is one of Royds's finest prints and her work is becoming increasingly difficult to find in today's market. (We sold this impression several years ago and are pleased to re-offer it.)

Magpie
ALLEN W. SEABY

This is a very fine impression printed on Japanese paper. The margins are wide but with a narrow margin along the top. The condition is fair.
